Green Tea

You have probably heard a lot about the green tea recently.

From nutrition bars to supplements to skin products, it seems like there is a little bit of green tea in everything. Products tout its antioxidant properties and rightly so. Green tea has been around for thousands of years, but only recently have we really begun to understand the benefits of green tea’s antioxidant and caffeine properties and its restorative effects on the skin and body.

Green tea’s most obvious property is its high levels of antioxidants called polyphenols, specifically epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Basically, this means that green tea fights free radicals. Free radicals are byproducts of environmental damage as well as the body’s own metabolism. By quenching free radicals, green tea is amazing for the body, mind, and skin. Studies have shown that EGCG helps not only inhibits cancer cells from growing, but it might also kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. Think of it this way: green tea helps combat and neutralize the toxins lingering around in your body. These antioxidant properties are the reason skin care lines have begun incorporating green tea into their products: an all-natural way to fight toxins.

Additionally, a recent study has shown that green tea may help neutralize the effect of UV rays. This is why green tea is sometimes attributed to preventing premature aging! Green tea drinkers are also less likely to develop heart disease and skin cancer. It is an anti-inflammatory agent, too, meaning it could help alleviate skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, and dandruff, where the body’s inflammatory pathways are upregulated.

Did you know green tea also contains high levels of caffeine? There are non-caffeinated versions, as well, but for coffee drinkers this is great news. Just one cup contains half of the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. It stimulates the metabolism and is linked to aiding in weight loss and combating fat cells. Are you ready to reap the benefits of the green tea phenomenon? What’s not to love?
