Retinol

As we age, our skin slows down its production of collagen and elastin – the components in our skin that contribute to its volume and fullness.

Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative that has a multitude of positive effects on the skin. These include improving and texture and tone of the skin, helping the skin turn over and exfoliate, combating acne, and even reversing the effects of aging.

Vitamin A helps reverse the signs of aging by stimulating the production of collagen. With this new increase in volume, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – telltale signs of aging – can be reduced and even eliminated.

Furthermore, the chief ingredient in Retinol, Vitamin A, acts as a potent antioxidant and helps capture and destroy the free radicals within the skin that lead to premature skin aging.

‘Retinoids’ are the tiny components of retinol and are also derivatives of Vitamin A. Similarly, they reduce fine lines and wrinkles, unclog pores, and promote collagen production.

The Vitamin A creams and topical treatments were originally developed as an acne therapy several decades ago because of their ability to increase skin differentiation and turn over skin cells. This leads to an increase in the exfoliation of dead and sticky skin cells that clog pores. As well, these medications and products are associated with a decrease in the inflammation associated with acne.

Vitamin A products further reduce the oil production by sebaceous glands in the skin. These are the glands that produce sebum, and oily and waxy substance that clogs pores and can lead to the development of acne. While dermatologists often recommend cleansing the skin to remove sebum before applying any skin products, Retinol and Retinoids can reduce the production and secretion of sebum, and decrease the likelihood of breakouts and clogged pores.

Retinol and Retinoids have also been shown to improve the tone and texture of the skin. They can reduce dark marks such as sun spots and melasma, and discoloration and textural changes often seen with acne scarring. Patients using retinol notice a more even complexion, and plumper healthier appearing skin cells.

Overall, retinol is a must in the skin care regimen, especially for those looking for anti-aging products. Although it should be avoided by women during pregnancy, it is a safe and effective way to improve the skin’s appearance. You can find it over the counter at a beauty store or drugstore, or talk to the physicians at Sanova Dermatology to see if a prescription-strength Vitamin A is right for your skin care needs.
