How Does Platelet-Rich Protein Rejuvenate Hair and Skin?
There are many options when looking to smooth and restore the skin, but what if you could naturally boost your collagen production and reveal a more youthful appearance?
What Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
“Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments use a patient’s own blood plasma for a variety of procedures, ranging from treating conditions like arthritis and easing muscle strain to smoothing out wrinkles in the skin and helping to promote hair growth,” explains Emily Johnston, Physician Assistant at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. During a treatment, blood is first drawn from the patient. Then the platelets are isolated, allowing them to be injected into the affected area needing restoration. Microneedling is often used for therapeutic applications as it triggers a wound-healing response in the skin, further increasing collagen production and new cell growth. PRP combined with microneedling treatments is what many refer to as the “vampire facial”.
So how does platelet-rich protein work when used in therapeutic treatments for hair and skin conditions?
Much like when it’s used in other treatments, blood is first drawn from the person receiving the treatment. The platelets are isolated while the injection site is prepared. Once injected, the protein works to stimulate the production of stem cells in the area. “This in turn helps to trigger the production of collagen, new blood vessels, and fatty tissue,” shares Johnston.
This increase in cell growth helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve the look of stretch marks, and even treats some conditions which cause hair loss. Multiple treatments are usually recommended in order to achieve the best results. While some improvement may be seen immediately, collagen production is a slower process so the condition of skin and hair will typically continue to improve over the next six to twelve months.
