Top 4 Tips For Teen Skin

Teens are going through many changes and are typically living life on the go. Alterations in skin due to hormones and busy schedules can make it difficult for teens to find a skincare routine that works for them and that isn’t too complex or timely to complete. Other than the use of multi-functional and sometimes prescription products that effectively deal with common causes of acne, below are some effective and easy skin tips any teen can follow.

Proper Cleansing

“Cleansing your skin with face wash daily can help to minimize breakouts and treat acne,” notes Lesley Ott, a nurse practitioner that specializes in dermatology at our Baton Rouge location. The use of a gentle cleanser can be an important first step to any good skincare routine in removing debris and preparing the skin for application of other products.

Exfoliation

Clearing debris from the surface of your skin is essential in keeping you blemish-free as you head back to school. “If your skin is prone to acne, you need to be particular about the exfoliating products you use,” Dr. Hilda Wong suggests.

You need to use an exfoliator that is gentle yet effective in removing pore-clogging debris and dirt.  A great example of a chemical exfoliator is SkinCeuticals LHA Cleanser. The LHA cleanser contains a high concentration of exfoliating acids that are great at targeting acne.

Moisturizing

Maintaining a healthy skin barrier and preventing dry skin is a crucial step in preventing acne. The use of an oil-free moisturizer helps to keep your skin’s natural oils in check and provides extra nutrients to the skin. “Maintaining a healthy skin barrier and moisture levels can protect against environmental stressors and bacteria, minimizing the risk of future breakouts,” emphasizes Ott.

Sun Protection

Many over-the-counter and prescription acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. “It is important to protect yourself from sunburn and premature skin aging by applying daily sunscreen,” Ott says. EltaMD UV Clear is an excellent daily sunscreen formulated to help protect acne-prone skin.
