The Other Orange and Black

It’s that time of year again, when ghosts, goblins, witches and warlocks come out of the dark. Halloween is a spooky and fun time of year. It’s a time to get out of our routine, be creative, dress up and have fun. With orange and black jack-o-lanterns displayed in every storefront and on every porch, its hard to miss the tricks and treats of Halloween.

Orange and black are also the colors of skin cancer awareness. The American Academy of Dermatology initiated the SPOT Orange on Melanoma Monday campaign encouraging all dermatologists and skin care providers to wear orange on the first Monday in the month of May. The month of May is also the time we encourage individuals to wear black ribbons for to raise melanoma skin cancer awareness and protect themselves from harmful UV sun rays over the summertime.

With the cooler weather and warmer clothes, summer and skin care might seem far off. But fall is also the time when skin care and sun protection should not be forgotten. No matter what time of year, the facts remain:

  • More people are diagnosed with skin cancer than any other form of cancer.
  • 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some time in their life.
  • Melanoma is the most common form of cancer in young adults 25-29 years old.
  • One person dies from melanoma every hour in the United States.

Black_ribbonSo don’t be shy. Whether you’re a zombie with peeling flesh, or sexy nurse with a way too short lab coat, make sure to check your skin for signs of skin cancer. If you have a non-healing bump or bleeding spot on the skin, or an irregular mole with multiple colors and uneven edges, don’t be scared of getting it checked out.

And remember, Halloween is no time to be frightened of skin care. Continue to wear your broad spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen throughout the year, and talk to one of the board certified dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology about any concerning spots on your skin.
