How to Treat Acne Scars with the Spectra Laser

Acne scars don’t only plague teenagers. Often, the remnants of teenage acne can stick around, following us well into adulthood. Acne scars can make us self-conscious and insecure. If you’re tired of your acne scars getting too much attention, Dr. Kimberly Finder can help with the Spectra Laser™ system.

How Does the Spectra Laser™ Reduce Acne Scars?

The Spectra Laser™ system is non-ablative, meaning it doesn’t abrade the topmost layer of your skin and is capable of reducing acne scars as well as preventing breakouts and the creation of new scars. “Unlike other lasers, Spectra™ can be switched between different wavelengths as we determine which area of treatment would benefit most from which wavelength,” notes Dr. Kimberly Finder, board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology in San Antonio, Texas. “In Spectra mode, photothermal energy stimulates the epidermis and the dermis to reduce inflammation and generate new skin cells to replace the scarred cells acne leaves behind,” Dr. Finder continues. This mode also goes deep into the dermis to strengthen the collagen matrix which provides support and nutrients to your skin. The second mode is Q-switched, which uses photomechanical means to exfoliate the outer layer of the skin. By reacting with the SpectraLotion™ applied at the start of your treatment, this mode removes the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin and stimulates cellular turnover. Acne scars are replaced with new skin cells, and the treatment reduces sebum to prevent further breakouts which leads to more scars.

Am I a Good Candidate?

  • If you suffer from:
  • Inflammatory acne
  • Enlarged pores
  • Oily skin leading to breakouts
  • Have sensitive skin
  • Desire a gentler procedure than CO2 fractional laser or microneedling
then you may be an ideal candidate for Spectra Laser™ treatments.

What is the Treatment Like?

Your procedure begins with a thorough cleansing of your face. Then the SpectraLotion™ is applied, which contains fine carbon particles designed to interact with the Spectra Laser™ energy at the scarring level and within the pores. “Laser treatment begins with the Spectra mode, which heats both the surface and deeper into the dermis of your face, reducing inflammation from acne and stimulating new skin cell growth and collagen production,” shares Dr. Finder. The surface of your skin is also exfoliated. Then the Q-switched mode is activated, which causes the fine carbon particles to react, continuing with exfoliation while shrinking pores, reducing sebum production (the dead skin cells and clogs within pores), stimulating collagen production, and fracturing melanin deep in the skin to smooth out uneven skin tones. The result is a clearer, smoother, brighter complexion.

Results and Downtime

“Spectra Laser™ treatments are gentler than some other, more aggressive laser treatments, and downtime is minimized,” assures Dr. Finder. Patients frequently return to their busy schedules immediately following their procedure, and may resume wearing makeup the very next day. With a series of treatments, your acne scars are diminished and your skin is left smoother, healthier, and renewed with new tissue and new collagen support.
