Newborn skin is very sensitive, so any products used should be the bare minimum. The skin is just beginning to build its barriers, so products that adults use are often too strong for newborn skin. However, newborn skin is susceptible to many different kinds of skin irritations, so if any of them do occur, you’ll need to treat them using a mild and gentle product. Look for products that do not contain dyes, parabens, or any type of fragrance.
First things first, like everyone, newborns should stay out of the sun as much as possible. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend sunscreen for children under the age of 6 months. Still, babies’ skin is extremely sensitive and prone to sunburn. Protective measures such as clothing, hats, any type of sun shade is preferable to a sunscreen, especially in newborns. For older infants, a sunscreen may be applied if necessary, but it should be hypo-allergenic and fragrance free. Zinc oxide-based sunscreens are most commonly recommended for sunscreen.
As for diapers, something is to be said about the best type of diapers to prevent diaper rash. Some parents prefer the environmentally-friendly and reusable cloth diapers, but these are often more likely to cause skin irritation or diaper rash. Symptoms of a diaper rash are red blotches or bumps in the diaper area. A cause of diaper rash is most often moisture in the diaper area that rubs and creates the irritation. This can be prevented with many types of diapers that are designed to wick away any moisture, leaving nothing to irritate the infant’s skin. If you are committed to cloth diapers and your baby gets a rash, try going diaper-free for some periods during the day. This will ensure there is nether rubbing or irritating the skin.
There are several other skin issues that infants are prone to, including cradle cap, dry skin, eczema, and milia. Some of these may be cleared up after switching to gentler products that contain fewer chemicals, but you may need to see a dermatologist if symptoms persist.
