Skin Reactions
Skin reactions such as allergic contact rashes, dry skin, eczema, dermatitis, and poison ivy, sumac, or oak. Skin reactions present as itchy redness, swelling, bumps, and blisters which seep. Skin becomes rough and scaly, flakes, cracks, or looks ashen in color. It’s best to avoid the source of the irritant, once it has been determined. Your dermatologist may recommend oral medications to combat the reaction from inside, topical creams, and emollients to soothe the skin.
Dermatologic Conditions
Common dermatologic conditions are those such as acne, rosacea, athlete’s foot, hair loss, seborrheic keratosis, psoriasis and nail fungus. We treat these with proper skin care education, and a variety of prescription oral and topical medications, laser and light therapies, chemical peels, anti-fungal powders and creams, and even surgical techniques.
Viral Diseases and Infections
These have a variety of different presentations on the skin. Genital warts appear as growths in the pubic region caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). “Cold sores” or fever blisters around the mouth might be indicative of a herpes simplex infection, and pink or flesh-colored bumps on other areas of the body might represent molluscum contagiosum. Yellow crusted patches on the skin could be a sign of a bacterial infection known as impetigo. Dermatologists battle viruses and skin infections with education, prescription topical anti-viral creams, excision, electrocautery, freezing, scraping, laser treatment, oral medications, and even shots.
Sun-Related Conditions
Sun-Related conditions range from sun spots or lentigo, and broken blood vessels (telangiectasia) with skin discoloration (poikiloderma) to actinic keratosis, atypical nevus (moles), basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. These latter skin disorders may appear as spots of pigmentation (brown, tan, bluish, black, red, pink, or skin-toned), and may be flat or raised. While many sun-related conditions are primarily a cosmetic concern, an unusual growth or a blemish that won’t heal warrants quick attention. Your dermatologist may remove the suspicious lesion by cryotherapy, surgical excision, scraping, cauterization, or Mohs surgery. More in-depth treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation can be necessary for some forms of skin cancer. Avoidance of UV exposure is vital to prevent these conditions.
