Protect Yourself with These Summer Skin Care Tips

Although it’s true for every season, summertime in particular is when we remind sun worshipers to haul out their sunscreen, thwart the threat of skin cancer, curb sun damage and the rapid-aging it can cause. Using sunscreen is an important factor in avoiding skin disease, but other steps can be taken to assure greater protection. Here are some helpful summer skin care tips.

Hats

The top of the head can burn from the sun despite having a full head of hair. Wearing a hat can help. “Hats that are opaque and tightly woven provide the best coverage,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, a board certified dermatologist and skin cancer specialist at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas.  Those with wide brims can also add extra protection for the ears, the face and neck.

Sunglasses

Always wear sunglasses when prolonged sun exposure is expected, or on days with a higher UV Index rating.  They can be prescription or over-the-counter types.  The thing to look for is labeling for 100% UV protection.

Tightly Woven Clothing

While many of us seek out lightweight, loose weaves during the summer, this type of clothing allows too much sun to penetrate through to the skin. Tightly woven clothing is one’s best bet when outdoors.

UPF-Rated Clothing

“When shopping for summer clothing, it is a good idea to find garments that have been sun rated,” Dr. Mamelak suggests. This is clothing that has been specially designed to protect the skin from the sun’s rays, and that is labeled with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating. The higher the rating, the more sun protection the garment offers.

Laundry Products

Yes, even your detergent can protect you from the sun! When purchasing laundry products, look for the seal of recommendation issued by the Skin Care Foundation. Detergents and laundry boosters with this seal help infuse sunscreen protection in the fibers of the clothing as it is being washed, and it really works.

Common Sense

One of the best things anyone can do to protect him or herself from the sun is to exercise common sense. Whenever possible, choose shade over direct sunlight, while outdoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Wear protective clothing, apply sunscreen liberally and often, and see a dermatologist regularly for skin examinations.
