With May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the dermatologists of Sanova Dermatology are emphasizing the importance of skin cancer prevention by offering helpful tips for skin protection, as well as how to detect if cancer is developing.

Austin, TX—According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the most prevalent form of cancer afflicting Americans each year is skin cancer. Every May, the topic of skin cancer is highlighted to bring awareness to its severity and educate people on how they can be proactive against the disease. As part of their mission to help people maintain healthy, cancer-free skin, Drs. Adam J. Mamelak and Miriam L. Hanson are sharing advice on how to prevent and detect skin cancer.

The Austin dermatologists emphasize five methods, in particular, for protecting oneself against the sun’s harmful rays:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day
  • Cover up and seek shade
  • Avoid tanning (outdoors or in UV tanning beds)
  • Don’t allow skin to burn (can significantly increase risk of skin cancer)
  • Perform a self skin care examination every month

Additionally, Drs. Mamelak and Hanson stress the importance of seeing a physician every year for a routine, full-body skin exam. By doing so, they explain that precancerous or cancerous lesions can be identified and removed before they have a chance to worsen.

To recognize these abnormal spots during a self-exam at home, the dermatologists recommend patients practice their ABCDE’s, which means looking for Asymmetry (mole/spot is uneven), Border (outside is jagged-looking), Color (has multiple shades), Diameter (larger than 6mm), and Evolution (changes with time). “Looking for these characteristics on a regular basis,” Drs. Mamelak and Hanson explain, “can be a life-saving habit.”

The dermatologists strongly encourage anyone who has not had their skin checked recently, or who suspects a potentially malignant spot, to schedule an appointment with their physician. With millions of people being diagnosed each year, they believe skin cancer prevention and detection is a matter that should not be taken lightly.
