Dr. Adam Mamelak and Dr. Miriam Hanson use a non-surgical method to improve their patients’ jawlines and reduce the appearance of jowls.
Austin, TX — For men and women alike, the aging process causes skin laxity, which can sometimes result in the appearance of jowls along the jawline. Austin dermatologists Dr. Adam Mamelak and Dr. Miriam Hanson of Sanova Dermatology say they have helped patients at their practice reduce the appearance of jowls via a non-surgical technique. Dr. Hanson explains that although many patients believe this issue cannot be remedied without surgery, BOTOX® injections have proven to be very effective for treatment of this condition.
Dr. Hanson says the platysma muscle, which runs along the neck, can pull on the skin along the lower portion of the face, accentuating a “jowling” appearance. BOTOX® Cosmetic is able to relax this muscle, she says, creating a more contoured, youthful look. “Essentially, by injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic in specific points along the jawline, you can relax the platysma muscles, release the downward pull on the lower face, and give a lift to the jowls,” explains Dr. Hanson. She says this technique is also part of another non-surgical rejuvenation treatment offered at the practice, called the Nefertiti neck lift.
For patients who seek a more defined jawline, Drs. Mamelak and Hanson often use this injectable approach, as well. Dr. Mamelak says he has been quite impressed with BOTOX® Cosmetic’s ability to help individuals with strong square jaws achieve a more delicate appearance. Prior to this technique, he explains there was not a good way to augment the facial structure without surgical intervention. According to Dr. Mamelak, both men and women request this procedure in order to refine the shape of the jaws.
Dr. Mamelak says he and Dr. Hanson typically use BOTOX® Cosmetic for jaw reshaping, but injectable solutions such as Dysport® or Xeomin® are also effective for softening the jawline or reducing the appearance of jowls. In a recent blog post, titled “Enhance Your Jawline for a More Youthful Look – Without Surgery!”, Dr. Mamelak reminds patients interested in this treatment that due to the differences in muscle and skin thickness, men and women may require different dosages of the cosmetic injectables to achieve their desired results. Although results are not permanent, the doctors say they can often last for more than six months after a single treatment.
Overall, Drs. Hanson and Mamelak say their patients have been pleased with the results, and are often surprised at the effect a few small injections can have on their overall appearance.
