How Can I Prevent Skin Cancer?

how-to-prevent-skin-cancerWe know that approximately 90% of skin cancers can be attributed to UV and sun exposure. Although skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in humans, by taking the right precautions, the vast majority of these cancers can be prevented. The best way to prevent skin cancer is to protect yourself from the sun.

Using sunscreen daily and remembering to reapply every two hours when outdoors (more frequently if you are swimming or sweating) is one of the best strategies – The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, and using one with a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB protection) is best. If you plan to be outdoors for an extended time, a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended.

Sun protective clothing is also a must – remember to cover up with long sleeves, hats and sunglasses to protect your eyes. If possible, seek shade when outdoors. It is also a good idea to avoid tanning and tanning beds – tanning outdoors or in a tanning bed is a sure-fire way to significantly if not exponentially increase your risk of developing skin cancer.
