Caring for Acne-Prone Skin in Winter

ModelWhile winter means cooler, drier temperatures for Austin residents, that doesn’t necessarily include a reprieve from breakouts and blemishes. Fortunately, the cloud cover that comes with the season can serve a beneficial purpose. Many of the advanced acne treatments at Sanova Dermatology require patients to avoid excess exposure to sunlight. Take advantage of the shorter days and help achieve smoother, clearer, and pimple-free skin at the same time with our state-of-the-art techniques designed with your needs and goals in mind.

Chemical Peels
Acne occurs when the pores get clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and hair. A chemical peel can remove the blockages by “peeling” the top layers of skin and allowing newer, younger, and smoother skin to generate in its place. Not only can chemical peels help cleanse and refresh the skin, this treatment can also help to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Laser Resurfacing
This technique gently removes the top skin layers that can contribute to acne, a dull complexion, and uneven skin tone and texture. We will customize the treatment plan to address your unique anatomical needs and expressed goals. As with our chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing can also help to smooth over acne and other facial scars.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Levulan BLU-U®
An innovative light-based treatment, PDT directly affects the causes of acne: clogged pores and bacteria. The two-step technique involves applying a topical solution to the skin followed by exposing the treated area to blue light (BLU-U®). As a result, your pores should produce less oil, experience higher skin cell turnover, and develop less pimple-causing bacteria.

When you arrive for your initial consultation, we will examine your areas of concern and develop a customized treatment plan that may include one or more treatments. If you would like to schedule an appointment or learn more about our techniques, please contact our office today.
