Juvederm Volbella vs. Restylane Silk — Which Dermal Filler is Best?

If you are interested in using a dermal filler on your lips, the chances are good that you are wondering which product is best for your particular needs. Volbella is a relatively new product and Restylane Silk is older and more established. Both have benefits and drawbacks.

Beautiful natural lipsJuvederm Volbella is used to create smooth, full lips. “It removes small wrinkles and lines by plumping out the skin of the lips and giving a soft appearance,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson. The active ingredient in Volbella is a hyaluronic acid injectable gel filler that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved for lip augmentation and to smooth the line around the lips. The results obtained by using Volbella have been noted to last up to 12 months. Containing Juvederm’s new VYCROSS technology, Volbella excels at smoothing kissing and smokers lines around the mouth, and providing soft, lush lips.

Restylane’s Silk was the first FDA approved lip injectable product to be used to shape lips and remove lines by plumping the tissue. Like Volbella, Silk is also a hyaluronic acid filler, and the results have also noted to last between 6 to 12 months.

“Both Volbella and Silk are excellent choices for the lips,” Dr. Hanson shares. “I find Silk is a stiffer product. I often choose this filler to define the lip line, or increase lip fullness.”

Both products can be molded to some extent after they are injected into the tissue for ideal results. Obviously, such sculpting should be left up to a professional skilled with these techniques.
