Could Dermaplaning Give You the Complexion Benefits You’re Looking For?

Dermaplaning is a safe, simple procedure for exfoliating the outer or top layer of skin (the epidermis), and ridding the skin of “peach fuzz”. Even though the name sounds a little like dermabrasion, the two are not synonymous.

Dermaplaning Demystified

“Using a scalpel and a light touch, the provider gently abrades the surface of the skin using delicate, feather-like strokes,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, board certified Dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology. Dermaplaning produces many of the same benefits as chemical peels do, so it’s ideal for patients who want deep exfoliation, but want to avoid chemicals, as well as pregnant or nursing women. It’s also a wonderful treatment for patients with excess vellus hair on their faces. “This peach fuzz tends to trap dirt and oils in its follicles, so removing it results in healthier, skin that looks smoother and brighter,” Dr. Hanson shares. And contrary to popular belief, removing fine vellus hair from the face does not result in its growing back heavier, darker or more coarse.

In the hands of a trained professional, the procedure is a safe and effective method of deep exfoliation. It can be performed monthly in under 30 minutes.

What are the Benefits?

Exfoliating with dermaplaning triggers the skin’s cells to regenerate. It also allows products like moisturizers and serums to better penetrate the skin. “The procedure is especially beneficial for those with rough, dry-looking skin, and uneven skin tone, and acne scars,” notes Dr. Hanson. Dermaplaning can minimize the look of superficial acne scars. It’s also indicated for more mature skin, since cell turnover declines as we age, often resulting in a build-up of dead skin cells which makes the complexion look dull.

Who Should Avoid the Procedure

As with any procedure, there are those with certain conditions who should avoid dermaplaning. Women with active acne or very oil skin, and those with thick, dark facial hair should ask their dermatologist for alternatives.

A Word of Caution

Dermaplaning is not a procedure to attempt at home! The procedure demands a skilled hand, and you could do more harm than good if you try to do it yourself! Talk to a trained cosmetic dermatologist about whether you’re a good candidate for dermaplaning.
